TRAX Forward is a unified term that encompasses the ongoing TRAX improvements and modernization projects. As the Salt Lake Valley continues to grow and evolve, UTA remains committed to providing sustainable, desirable, and efficient transportation options that meet the needs of our vibrant community.

Why Improve TRAX?

Since the mid-1990s, UTA has been building out and operating its light rail system, and now the time has come to further adapt to the evolving travel patterns and technological progress.
Combat unique environmental wear and tear from extreme summer and winter weather to ensure greater reliability, safety, and efficiency year-round.
UTA strives to make future light rail travel even easier, safer, faster, and more convenient for riders.
UTA is focused on enhancing the interface between light rail and other modes of transportation, ensuring a seamless, safe, and efficient travel experience for all.

1. Service Expansion and Capacity Upgrades
The goal is to expand TRAX service and increase capacity in congested areas of downtown Salt Lake City.

Support local and regional transportation growth
Increase access to opportunities for disadvantaged populations

Projects include:

TRAX Orange/Red Line Realignment
TRAX Blue/Green Line Termini Adjustment
Late Night/Early Morning Service
S-Line Extension

2. Modernized Accessible Fleet:
Initial purchase of 20 new, low-floor light rail vehicles has been funded, with the opportunity to acquire more vehicles. 30 percent of the current fleet is outdated and that affects performance and reliability.

Projects include:

Light Rail Vehicle Rehabilitation
SD100/SD160 Light Rail Vehicle Replacement
Light Rail Fleet Expansion

3. Station Improvements:
Removal of high-blocks will bring the light rail fleet into ADA compliance per the Federal Transit Administration. Leverage technologies that provide accurate information on train arrivals and departures, building trust in reliability.

Passenger information
Stations and Platform Rehab/Replacement
TRAX High Block Removals

4. Speed & Reliability:
Invest in infrastructure upgrades to allow higher frequencies and improve mainline elements so light rail vehicles can operate safely and higher speeds.

Projects Include:

Traction Power Rehab/Replacement
Union Interlocking Upgrades and Turnback at Central Pointe
Potential TRAX Frequency Improvements
Transit Signal Priority (TSP) Improvements

5. Signaling and Safety:
Proactively replace obsolete equipment in the system with more modern and capable equipment. Implement train-to-train communication systems for increased capacity, safety, and reliability.

Red/Blue/Green Line Camera Systems
Train Control Rehab & Replacement
Rail Switches & Trackwork Controls Rehab/Replacement
Fiber Overhaul
